You are currently in a state of panic because you dropped something on your brand new glass table top, and it left a mark, and you don’t know what to do about it. Fortunately, for you, there are ways that chips on glass table tops can be repaired. So, before you go out and buy another glass table top, continue to read this article, as it may provide you with some valuable information.

For starters, just about any chip that goes into the glass perpendicular to the glass surface can be repaired. If that’s the case with you, then there’s no need for you to panic. Calm down and continue to read. If you’re somewhat handy, or if there is a glass shop nearby, then you’ll be just fine.

Perhaps, the simplest way to deal with chips on glass table tops is to put something over the chip, like a place mat or a desk pad, so that no one will notice. Just last week, I noticed a chip on my glass computer desk. I just so happened to be in need of a new leather desk pad at the time, so I bought a big one that now sits on top of the chip. The desk looks just fine, like nothing ever happened. However, depending on your preference, this might not be good enough.

If you have a round table top, and the chip is on the edge of the top, then you may want to take the glass table top to a nearby professional glass shop that has a circle cutter available. With this cutter, the shop can remove an inch or so off of the circumference, removing the affected area. This is great, as long as you don’t mind having a slightly smaller table top. However, if that doesn’t satisfy you, then install a flexible molding around the perimeter of the top. This is the same type of molding that is commonly found on counter tops. This will cover up the chip like nothing ever happened. However, you might need to sand the affected area to insure that the molding will adhere to the glass table top.

You can visit your local Wal-Mart and pick up one of the many resin kits that automotive professionals use to repair chips and cracks on windshields. The resin is normally an epoxy or acrylic adhesive filler. However, this will involve some more work on your part, as you will probably need to do some sanding and other surface preparation before and after you apply the resin, so that the affected area will blend in with the rest of the table top when the job is done. Follow the directions on the kit very carefully if you decide to go this route. The good news is that these kits can be bought for as little as $10.

If none of these options will help you repair your chip, and hiding the chip is not an option, you may want to discuss the matter with a glass professional before you go out and replace your glass table top.
