If you want to install a new driveway, patio, or walkway, you may have received a bit of sticker shock after you’ve received the estimates from the bidding contractors. Who would have thought that a little bit of stone would have cost so much? In fact, concrete pavers and other forms of paving stones are so expensive for a variety of reasons. Understanding these reasons can help you minimize the costs that you will have to face. In this article, then, we point out the main factors that drive the price of hardscape; then we will tell you how you can use this information to save a bunch of cash on your next project.

  • The first major factor is simply due to the process required to install the brick. Each paver must be laid by hand; this leads to a  ton of time and labor required to transport, lay, and cut all the pavers required to fit into your pattern. To help control these costs, consider doing as much of the work, if not all of it, yourself. Paving stones are a viable DIY project for many homeowners, so don’t discount the possibility.
  • Next, consider the price of the stones themselves. Concrete is by far the cheapest, though brick and natural stone make up for their high price with plenty of beauty. The best way to save money here is to go with less expensive concrete pavers – settle for ‘standard’ sizes like the 6 x 9″ Holland stone, and use simpler and more common color blends.
  • The time of year matters. Most projects of these kind are completed in the spring and summer. Thus, if you hire a contractor out of season, you will usually may much less, so shoot for the fall and winter, if possible. Note though that some areas experience ground freezing; this would make winter hardscape work near impossible.
  • The design itself. If you go with a fancy design and pattern, one that requires a lot of cuts, this will increase both the amount of labor required and the amount of material needed. Thus, if you are on a budget, go with a simpler design that requires less time and treasure to complete.
  • Finally, each contractor will charge different prices. This is just the free market in action. To make sure you’re getting a good price, get different estimates from three contractors.
